How To Style Your TV Seamlessly into Your Home Design
Incorporating a TV into your home design can be tricky. While it’s a staple in almost every modern living room, finding a way to seamlessly integrate it without disrupting your home’s aesthetic can feel like a challenge—especially if there’s no obvious spot for it. The good news? There are plenty of creative ways to make your TV a stylish and functional part of your space. In this post, I’ll share my favorite tips for designing around your TV, from hidden storage solutions to striking media walls. Let’s dive into how you can effortlessly blend your TV into your home decor!
Wall Mouldling
Wall moulding is a fantastic way to add depth and character to a wall and space, especially when dealing with blank walls. The clean lines and sections created by moulding can be strategically used to make your TV look like an intentional part of the room. By placing your TV within one of these designated sections, you can achieve a custom, high-end feel that makes the space feel more thoughtfully designed. However, it’s important to avoid hanging the TV directly over the seams of the moulding, as this can make the wall look too busy and visually cluttered. Also. I know the gen z-ers have popularized putting actual frames around their tv, in my opinion, wall mounding is the better luxury looking alternative.
Sconces
If a full built-in isn't your style or budget, sconces are an excellent alternative for framing your TV while adding warmth and ambiance to your space. Not only do they ground the TV, but they also provide soft, atmospheric lighting for a more enjoyable movie-watching experience. Be mindful of placement—position the sconces at eye level or slightly above to ensure they complement the TV’s height and maintain a balanced, cohesive look. Placing them too high separates them from the tv defeating the entire purpose of this technique. This thoughtful approach enhances both the aesthetics and functionality of your viewing area.
Gallery Wall
If you are the type of person who likes art and you’re looking to add visual interest and make a bold statement, incorporating your TV into a gallery wall can seamlessly blend it into your design. Position the TV at the center of the arrangement to create a balanced, cohesive look. I always suggest using varying sizes of art to create more movement and flow compared to perfectly straight lines. Additionally, since the TV is typically the largest element, placing it off-center can disrupt the harmony of the space, making it feel unbalanced and off-kilter. A well-planned, centered gallery wall ensures both the TV and surrounding artwork work together to enhance the overall aesthetic of the room.
Open Shelves
Open shelves offer a minimalist, clean look that not only helps fill a wall but also provides a functional space for displaying decor. To maintain visual harmony, remember that our eyes tend to favor a bottom-heavy composition. Follow the golden ratio by ensuring the bottom console is at least twice the height of the items above it. Take note of the example: on the left, the base cabinets are double that of the shelf above. This ratio creates a balanced, harmonious look, while on the right, the top-heavy arrangement with double shelves and a low console feels distracting and unbalanced.
Fireplace
If you have an existing fireplace, placing the TV above it is a popular and effective choice, as the fireplace is often the natural focal point of the room. Our eyes naturally gravitate toward the center, so aligning the TV with this feature makes sense. However, it's not as simple as just mounting the TV. To maintain balance, follow the bottom-heavy principle mentioned earlier. Fireplaces typically carry substantial visual weight at the bottom, and placing the TV directly above can create a heavy, top-loaded focal point. To counteract this, leave negative space above the TV and keep the sides open but not empty.
In the example on the right, there are several issues to address. First, the cabinets are positioned lower than the fireplace, disrupting the horizontal balance. Second, the upper cabinets create an imbalance by drawing the eye too high, while the TV sits too close to the ceiling. In contrast, the left photo demonstrates a more harmonious approach: the top of the fireplace aligns perfectly with the tops of the cabinets, and the open shelves help balance the weight of the space without competing for attention.
Built-In Wall Shelving Unit
A popular solution for a living room TV setup is an entertainment center. However, unless you find one that perfectly spans the length of your wall, it can often feel clunky and out of place. The alternative is to create a custom built-in that fits the entire wall, which can be achieved either by using pre-assembled options like IKEA cabinets or by hiring a professional. No matter how you go about it, there are a few key considerations. One of the most important is the direction of your visual lines: horizontal or vertical.
In the examples below, you can see how these choices impact the flow of the space. On the left, the sections are arranged horizontally, creating a sense of width and unity, which makes the room feel larger. On the right, the sections are arranged vertically, which can disrupt the visual flow and create a more segmented feel.
Another detail to consider is the treatment of the space above the TV. When going for a substantial built-in look, it’s important to enclose the TV with a shelf or trim at the top. This makes it feel like an integrated part of the design, rather than an afterthought. Leaving the space above the TV open can make the TV feel almost exposed and separate from the rest of the cabinetry. A closed top shelf helps the TV blend into the overall design, creating a cohesive, intentional look—so even when the TV is off, the space still feels stylish and complete.
