How To Use Color In your Space Like a Designer
Amidst the popularity of neutral color pallets and monochromatic design selections. It is easy to forget how simple it can be to optimize the full color wheel in your space. Designers know that when used correctly, color can bring depth, energy, and a sense of harmony to any room. While the full color wheel offers endless possibilities, it’s important to use it strategically, considering both the function of the space and the overall aesthetic. In this post, we’ll dive into some tried-and-true color techniques used by professionals to create vibrant, cohesive, and timeless designs that make a lasting impact.
Paint your Trim! (not white)
Unless otherwise directed by a designer, moulding and trim is standard white. Because its cheap and you can’t mess it up. There is nothing adherently wrong with this and there are infact some spaces where white is the best option. With that said. There are many times I geek out over a space and deemed it superior to its white counterpart due to its incorporation of colors in these not-so common places. Specifically trim. Check out these examples
This practice can seem scary to a novice as if you select the wrong color… it can have the opposite affect. But notice how without the trim, the spaces are otherwise pretty neutral in color. As a rule of thumb, selecting a color that is opposite or next to the wall/floor color in the color wheel. (next to: green and blue, red and orange, blue and purple) (opposite: red and green, orange and blue, yellow and purple.) etc.
Color The Basics
In some cases, I might suggest, 'leave all the color to the styling and decor.' This advice particularly applies to renters, those uncertain about their personal style, or anyone unsure about choosing a couch color. If you're uncertain, a white couch can be styled in countless ways, just like white walls. However, opting for this route of safety means missing out on the enriching character that color can bring to your space.
For instance, when I see houses with stark white exterior trim , it often gives the impression of being unfinished. The same applies to walls, trim, and ceilings. While most people understand the need to paint their walls, leaving the trim white is common. While not necessarily a bad look, it can often lean towards a more rustic or even craftsman style. Painting trim or accents adds so much depth to your space. These examples do a great job.
Tile
Tile has a unique ability to completely transform a space, adding texture, color, and personality in ways that paint or decor alone can’t achieve. Whether it’s a bold patterned floor, a vibrant backsplash, or a textured accent wall, tile introduces a dynamic element that elevates any design. While customized tile can be pricey, focusing on smaller, detailed areas or nooks is a great way to stay budget-friendly without sacrificing style. By incorporating vibrant or patterned tiles in spaces like backsplashes, shower niches, or other focal points, you can create eye-catching details that truly stand out. In fact, a small sprinkle of bold tile in just the right places often makes a bigger impact than covering an entire wall, perfectly balancing cost and visual appeal.
Patterns
Patterns in interior design are a powerful tool for adding visual interest and infusing a space with color. Unlike solid hues, patterns often feature multiple colors, offering endless opportunities to build a cohesive color scheme. By incorporating a patterned rug, wallpaper, or textile, you create a focal point that ties the room together. The key is to pull colors from the pattern and repeat them throughout the space—in throw pillows, artwork, or decor. This repetition creates a harmonious flow while allowing you to introduce pops of color in a balanced way. Patterns not only draw the eye but also serve as a guide to help layer colors effortlessly, making the entire design feel intentional and dynamic.
All in the details
Bold, vibrant accents or small glimpses of color can bring a colorful essence to a room, even when the overall palette is neutral. A striking piece of artwork, a brightly patterned pillow, or a jewel-toned vase can instantly elevate the space, infusing it with energy and personality. These touches of color act as visual anchors, drawing the eye and creating a sense of cohesion by tying together other design elements. Even in a largely neutral room, these small yet impactful details have the power to define the room’s character, making it feel intentional and complete. They create balance by providing moments of vibrance without overwhelming the design, proving that even the smallest pops of color can have a big impact.
Flowers
Flowers are a timeless way to bring life and color into a space, instantly brightening the atmosphere and adding a touch of nature's beauty. A fresh bouquet can introduce vibrant hues, soft textures, and a sense of freshness that enlivens any room. However, maintaining fresh-cut flowers can be both costly and time-consuming, requiring regular care to keep them looking their best.
Thankfully, faux flowers have come a long way and now look remarkably realistic, making them an excellent alternative. High-quality faux blooms mimic the color, texture, and natural movement of real flowers, allowing you to enjoy their beauty without the upkeep. They’re a practical, cost-effective solution for adding a touch of elegance and vibrancy to your home, all while being maintenance-free. With faux flowers, you can achieve the same sense of life and color, ensuring your space remains effortlessly inviting year-round.
Art & Paintings
Art is one of the most powerful tools for introducing color into your design. A well-chosen piece can instantly elevate a space, serving as both a focal point and a palette from which to draw inspiration for the rest of the room. Whether it’s a vibrant abstract painting, a gallery wall of colorful prints, or a bold sculptural piece, art adds depth, emotion, and personality to a space. It’s a versatile way to infuse color without making permanent changes, allowing you to experiment with bold hues or patterns that might feel overwhelming in other forms. Beyond aesthetics, art has the unique ability to tell a story, reflecting your style and creating a cohesive connection between the elements of your design.
